A Knowledge-Based Conception of Academic Freedom

Pascal Engel

Résumé

The focus of this chapter is the peculiar vis-à-vis of academic freedom and the freedom of speech. The former is meant to foster and preserve that in which the latter, on the other hand, is not engaged, namely the production of knowledge that conforms with the criteria of scientific truth. This is to say that academic freedom is essentially knowledge-based, rather than opinion-based, and thus a positive freedom rather than a negative one. In the author’s view, freedom of speech must be taken as a consequence, not as a prerequisite of the freedom of research and teaching. Among other things, this view leads to the identification not only of external intrusions into academic freedom, but also of intrusions coming from within universities, through administrative oversight or internal conflict.
