El exilio, el patrimonio y la carta: correos de migrantes franceses a las Américas, 1884-1920

Abstract : The correspondence of Europeans migrants to the Americas often lies in private archives. Yet the circumstances of their conservation are hardly studied as are the texts of the letters themselves. Three letters of French exiles, kept in most surprising circumstances between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, demonstrate that it is possible to establish a dialogue between what the migrants relate and the care taken by their families to keep their epistolary traces. Beyond what these letters relate, the to-andfro movement between this correspondence and its conservation sheds new light on the extent of patrimonial issues raised by exile to the Americas. The correspondence of the European migrants had, at that time, the same value as the notarial titles that protected the inheritance rights of their families.
