Living free, what a project in the algorithmic society ?

Vivre libre, quel projet dans la société algorithmique ?

In this contribution, we intend to reflect on the idea of freedom within the "algorithmic society", an expression that refers both to exchanges on digital networks and to social activity assisted by computing technologies. To do so, we characterize the devices that, within this type of society, are likely to weaken freedom, understood from a political point of view, notably with the help of the concept of voluntary servitude formulated by Étienne de la Boétie. In view of this situation, what can a free existence consist of?

Dans cette contribution, nous entendons réfléchir à l’idée de liberté au sein de la « société algorithmique », expression qui renvoie à la fois aux échanges sur les réseaux numériques et à l’activité sociale assistée par les technologies de calcul. Pour ce faire, nous caractérisons les dispositifs qui, au sein de ce type de société, sont susceptibles d’affaiblir la liberté, entendue du point de vue politique, notamment à l’aide du concept de servitude volontaire formulé par Étienne de la Boétie. En regard de cette situation, en quoi peut consister une existence libre ?
