Une théologie de l’informel. Le pli et son ombre dans le bénédictionnaire d’Æthelwold

The present article addresses the presence and meaning of a recurring motif in the paintings of the Benedictional of St. Æthelwold (London, British Library, Ms Add 49598). This motif consists of a white line and its translucent shadow. Repeated throughout the manuscript, this formless element ensures in the images the visibility of an invisible presence, that of the Spirit acting in the world in the same way as it acts when pronouncing the blessings copied in the manuscript. This article hypothesizes that the figuration process in the benedictional responds to the mechanisms of medieval abstraction, and transforms this painted detail, regardless its apparent insignificance, into the non-mimetic evidence of the Holy Spirit.

Le présent article est consacré à un motif récurrent dans les peintures du bénédictionnaire d’Æthelwold (Londres, British Library, Ms Add 49598). Il se compose d’une ligne blanche doublée d’une ombre translucide. Répété dans tout le manuscrit, cet élément informel des images assure la visibilité d’une présence invisible, celle de l’Esprit qui agit dans le monde de la même façon qu’il agit lors de la prononciation des bénédictions contenues dans le livre. Cet article fait l’hypothèse que le processus de figuration mis en œuvre répond aux mécanismes de l’abs- traction médiévale et fait dans ce détail des peintures l’indice non-mimétique de l’Esprit-Saint.
