19th-century French naval, missionary and diplomatic archival sources on Ryūkyū

The bulk of Ryukyu-related archival sources located in France covers the period from the early 1840's to the beginning of the Meiji era, that is, from the time when France, in search of a foothold for its expansion in the Far East, began operations in Ryukyu to Japan’s opening, which eventually resulted in the extinction of its interest in these islands. For the most part this material consists of letters and reports from Navy officers and missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society who visited or stayed in Ryukyu and of diplomatic dispatches concerned with the gradual annexation of the kingdom by Japan during the 1870s. This presentation will give an overview of these documents along with other archive material such as maps, manuscripts and printed books.

フランスに所在する琉球に関する主要資料は、フランスが極東進出の拠点として琉球に対して活動を開始した1840年代初頭から、日本の開国が間近になり琉球に対する関心が薄れていく明治時代の初めにかけての期間の史料群である。その内訳は、海軍とパリ外国宣教会の宣教師が琉球王国と関係していた時期の書簡や記録文書と、琉球王国が日本に併合されていく過程を報告した1870年代から1880年ごろまでの外交文書である。本発表では、これらの史料の概略を紹介し、また、地図、写本、刊本など、そのほかの資料についても触れる。
