The diasystemic treatment of final vowels in the transition area between oïl, oc and francoprovençal in the eastern Croissant raises theoretical questions related to the phonological, morphological and syntactic status of morphemes. There are pheno- mena of interpenetration and influence between morphemes in all three languages. Using ALF maps, this paper documents and interprets the variation of the three diasystems in the nominal morphology and the processes of influence between them. It examines the relationship between natural gender and grammatical gender; the inherent status of gender and its interpretability.
