Promesses et impasses de la localisation cérébrale au XVIIe siècle

Abstract : Niels Steensen’s Discours sur l’anatomie du cerveau (1665) provides a severe but important criticism of the anatomy of the brain. It demonstrates that the descriptions of the brain then in vogue are full of topographical errors and based on fanciful hypotheses on cerebral functions. For this reason, they do not allow us to understand the mind-body relationships. To fulfill its promises, the anatomy of the brain has to initiate a reform program which involves technical, lexical, and institutional aspects.
