Lutter contre les rumeurs : mission impossible ?

Abstract : Rumour is a social phenomenon that constantly raises new questions for society. In order to understand its current forms, we need to decipher the social logic of this singular communication device and its role in the deregulation of information on the Internet and social networks. From the September 11 attacks to the terrorist acts recently perpetrated on different continents, the Internet and social networks have given a tragic topicality to the reflection on rumour, which, paradoxically, is still described as "the oldest medium for humanity". Specialists in the thick scholarly literature on rumours are not surprised by this apparent paradox or by the acuity of rumours in these troubled times. Indeed, as old as the social world, the phenomenon of rumours always borrows its dynamics from the representations, emotions and technologies of the present time. A challenge for its scientific study.
