Le transport en vrac : dolia ou tonneaux ?
Résumé
The last twenty years, amphoric and epigraphic discoveries made at the mouths
of the Rhone and Lyon have led to consider that products were transported in
bulk in dolia or barrels. For wine, the painted inscriptions massicum on Gallic
amphorae, or the manufacture in Lyon of amphorae imitating the Dressels 2/4
amphorae of Falerne and Cos, could suggest such a transport. Based on the
limited duration of dolia ships (10 BC / 40-50 AD), and thanks to a crosschecking
with new data, both epigraphic (Albanum sample) and archaeological
(barrel pipettes), it seems possible to consider that the transition between
dolia ships loaded with doliad and vessels loaded with barrels could have
taken place between the middle of the first century AD and the beginning of
the Flavian period.
Depuis une vingtaine d’années, des découvertes amphoriques et épigraphiques
réalisées aux embouchures du Rhône et à Lyon ont conduit à envisager que
des produits étaient transportés en vrac dans des dolia ou dans des tonneaux.
Pour le vin, les inscriptions peintes massicum sur des amphores gauloises, ou
encore la fabrication à Lyon d’amphores imitant les Dressel 2/4 du Falerne et
de Cos, pouvaient suggérer un tel transport. En s’appuyant sur la chronologie
« resserrée » des bateaux-citernes (10 av. J.-C./40-50 apr. J.-C.), et en la
recoupant avec de nouvelles données, tant historiques, iconographiques,
épigraphiques qu’archéologiques, il semble possible d’envisager que la
transition entre les bateaux-citernes et des bateaux chargés de tonneaux
aurait pu s’opérer entre le milieu du Ier s. ap. J.-C et le début de la période
flavienne.
