Struggle for power in the highlands ? On the relationships between the light-ware and the black-ware crafting communities in the Caucasus and Beyond (ca. 4300-2900 BCE).

Résumé

This paper analyses the correlation between the rise and the expansion of the Kura-Araxes cultures (c. 4300-2900 BCE) and the progressive disappearance of Light-Ware crafting communities from the highlands between 3500 and 2800 BCE. It is suggested that the two phenomena may be related by a causal link, but other explanations, such as the limited availability of arable land in the Highlands, as well as the specificities of Kura-Araxes socio-economic system, are also discussed.
