Abstract : This contribution focuses on three Parisian circuses which, during the 19th century hosted symphonic works, vocal orphans and commemorations or charity concerts. Their architectural and acoustic characteristics, their layout and gauge will be studied as well as the repertoires which performed there and the public which frequented them. Their impact on the diffusion of music, the reactions of the public and the critics, but also the codes and media of visual representations are considered to understand the astonishment they aroused, their popular but relative ephemeral success for a few decades.
