Abstract : There are two intrinsic ways in which the "Speculum maius" shows the Dominican nature of the work, written first in two, then in three parts in the middle of the 13th century. The first and second parts of the article are focused on these clues: 1. the comparison between the encyclopedic program of Vincent de Beauvais and the study program of the Dominican studia, exploring the incentives from within the Order that led to the development and transformation of the 'Speculum maius'; 2. the investigation of the Dominican sources used among hundreds of quotations from 'auctoritates', which were integrated by Vincent de Beauvais for the writing and revision of the 'Speculum maius'. The third part shows that the work was well received (especially the 'Speculum historiale') but that its Dominican success is concentrated on some famous examples of posterity. The work was not only Dominican. The first part also recalls some historical elements about Vincent de Beauvais, the context of his writing, the patronage, the objectives and the genesis of his encyclopedic work. The second part focuses on the introduction, in the "Speculum maius", of whole sections from contemporary authors.
