Der folgende Beitrag vermittelt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Glasherstellung in Ägypten während der Hellenistischen und Römischen Zeit bis zur Spätantike. Er behandelt insbesondere die Rohglasöfen, die bereits im 1./2. nachchristlichenJahrhundert eine technische Revolution erfuhren, indem sie deutlich größer wurden. Die Wanneöfen zeigen einen hohen Grad an technischem Wissen und konnten mit einer Feuerung wohl 15–20 Tonnen Rohglas herstellen.

In the following paper, an overview of the development of glassmaking in Egypt from the Hellenistic Period until Late Antiquity is given. The focus lies on rawglass-furnaces, which already show a technical revolution in the 1st/2nd century AD by being radically increased in size. The tank furnaces show a masterful use of craftmanship and could pro-duce probably around 15–20 tons of glass within one firing.
