L'EUROPE ET LES DROITS DES PEUPLES AUTOCHTONES

Abstract : This article explores the relationship of European Union (EU) states to "indigenous issues" since the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The colonial legacy, cleavages over the right to self-determination, explain that these questions are not part of the acquis communautaire. The region does have a human rights system, but states hardly integrate the rights of indigenous peoples into their legislation; especially in industrial or commercial matters. However, the EU is showing increased attention and some developments are encouraging.
