'Hartani' : une enquête au pays des mots

Abstract : This study of the term « hartani », used in part of the Maghreb (Arabic-speaking and / or Berber-speaking), is divided in two parts. In the first part, the uses of this term are presented – its geographic distribution, its phonetic and semantic variations, its quasi synonyms. The analysis successively focuses on Arabic dialects and Berber varieties. In the second part, the lexical field of slavery is revisited from the perspective of work and freedom on one hand, social hierarchy and skin colors on the other.
