Digital archiving in the Arabe World

Abstract : This issue is presenting the various challenges of digital archiving in the Arab world through disciplinary views and thematic orientations that we wanted to be as varied as possible and covering all types of materials: books, as well as drawings, photos, sounds, data, etc. This issue does not claim to be exhaustive, but with a desire to cover a broad range of existing problems, and presents four main types of approaches. The first contributions return to the technical issues related to the Arabic language itself. Character recognition has not yet undergone the same developments as for Latin scripts, which makes digitization more complicated. Similarly, the automatic writing of Arabic still raises questions of standardization and archiving (both for published works and for the press). A second type of contributions questions the epistemological conditions of archiving and insists on the means of disseminating the materials produced. The third set of contributions presents experiences of conservation of sound archives, both personal and institutional. Finally, a unique contribution closes this issue by presenting a use of archival materials to build a literary object halfway between artistic performance and scientific production, as a symbolic reminder that for a long time the arts and sciences were not as distinct as they are today.
