Nature et fonctions du logos dans le traité d’Ecphante Sur la royauté (82, l. 7-83, l. 17, éd. Thesleff)

Abstract : In the treatise On Kingship, Ecphantus makes the imitation of God not only the foundation of the sovereign’s legitimacy, but also the driving force behind the subjects’ benevolence towards him. However, the weakness inherent in human nature sometimes leads the sovereign to use persuasion, akin to coercion, on his subjects. Ecphantus thus sketches a persuasive theory of the logos that helps men return to a superior lifestyle. We will study the nature and functions of the logos in this text, in the light of the different philosophical traditions which may have inspired Ecphantus.
