Les sphinx sur la statue de Prima Porta L’apothéose d’Auguste

Abstract : There is no satisfactory, universally accepted explication of the two sphinxes depicted on the shoulder straps of the cuirass, on either side of the head of the statue of Augustus found in the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta. Interpreting the sphinx as a symbol of apotheosis allows us to put forward another view of the two hybrid creatures and likewise to re-examine other figures in this iconography, as well as the date assigned to the work.
