Les nâ’ib du ḳaẓâ de Cos au XVIe-XVIIe siècle à la lumière du fonds ottoman des archives du monastère de Saint-Jean à Patmos

Abstract : One can find in the rich collection of Ottoman documents kept in SaintJohn Monastery’s archives, in Patmos, a great number of nâ’ibs, typically referred to by the formula hilâfeten müvellà. In 99 documents –mainly ḥüccets–from the first 22 files (covering a period from the end of the 15th to the middle of the 17th century), 56 nâ’ibs are mentioned, from different ḳaẓâs, mainly Rhodes, Samos, and Kos, under whose jurisdiction fell Patmos. The case of Kos (and of Patmos)is interesting because as an island inside an archipelago, it had to deal with specific questions, first of all about circulation and communications. Keeping that specificity in mind, this paper aims at tracing clues about who were those nâ’ibs and how long they kept their office, about their tasks, and about their possible local specialisation. A comparison is made with what the documentation tells us about the role of the nâ’ibs’ patrons: the kadıs.
