Les universitaires, combien de divisions ? Lignes de fracture et transformations de la profession académique en France depuis les années 1990

Abstract : This article reviews the transformations in the academic profession in France since the 1990s, highlighting an enduring structural tension: while, historically, this group developed around the ideal of an egalitarian community with uniform rules at national level, it has become increasingly fragmented over the last 30 years. New divisions have developed between and within disciplines, working environments have become increasingly differentiated at the individual level, and a new stratification of positions of power has emerged within the profession. In conclusion, the article shows that the debate which developed in 2019 and 2020 around a proposal to reform the funding and organisation of academic research reveals an exacerbation of these tensions.
