La Tradition sans l’exclusion. Richard Simon, Bossuet et le socinianisme face aux critères de l’authenticité

Abstract : In the XVIIth century, Richard Simon blamed the Roman Catholic Church for not following, according to the Tradition, the rule of Vincent of Lérins prohibiting all doctrinal innovation. By adopting Augustin’s own opinions, the Church has deviated from the constant Tradition of the Elders. But who to follow when two opposing parties of equal importance each find arguments in the Scriptures and the Tradition? This article shows that as opposed to the tenet of Bossuet, Richard Simon is not, on Trinitarian questions, an ally of the Socinians, but he tends rather to promote an indiscriminate Tradition, without exclusion.
