Institutions du pardon et politiques de la délivrance en Afrique de l’Ouest

Abstract : In the face of “crimes against humanity” and challenges to their human rights records, today’s African states continue to fill the political realm with liturgies of forgiveness, blending ideas of national reconciliation and deliverance from Evil. This article examines the examples of Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, two countries linked by a long history (manifested in Burkina Faso’s involvement in a conflict which divided Côte d’Ivoire), and draws comparisons with the procedures implemented in Rwanda and South Africa. It thus aims to shed light on the paradoxes of institutions of forgiveness and the forms of compromise they invent to absolve evil.
