Influence de l'âge et du sexe sur les modifications du Body Mass Index

Abstract : The increasing number of persons showing an important Body Mass Index value in developed countries – as being overweight is considered a cardio-vascular risk factor – leads more and more scientists to calculate overweight frequencies in different populations. These epidemiologic studies constitute a very interesting tool for physical anthropologists who want to study intra and inter-population variations. In the present study, we analyse the intra-population variations with age and sex, and demontstrate the strong age effect on the BMI value, and the sex effect on its distribution. The frequencies of overweight and obesity are calculated on a largre sample of 44894 persons (23917 males and 21697 feales), living in the region of Marseilles (France), in order to allow inter-population comparisons in further studies.
