Ownership and solidarity to ward off the worrying future
Appropriation et solidarité pour conjurer l'avenir inquiétant

The future looks bleak with global warming and the growing inequalities denounced by many economists. In this context, housing is one of the elements that can help to ward off precariousness. In this respect, public policies display the provision of housing for all and support for energy saving in essentially technical and normative forms, disconnected from local contexts and socially badly accepted. The inclusion of housing, as a social fact, in the long term, continues to be ignored (Fayolle Lussac, 2020), despite stimulating inhabitant initiatives. This is what we want to show with regard to social housing complexes or condominiums in France. To this end, qualitative surveys of an ethno-architectural type have been carried out. They include interviews with the inhabitants and, through the exercise of the gaze (Laplantine, 1996) and the drawing of the survey (Pinson, 2015), apprehend their relationship to the dwelling through the material traces of occupation and improvement of the space. With this method, we can thus observe what the architect-anthropologist Philippe Bonnin calls the "continuous production" of the dwelling (Bonnin, 1994), that is, a set of concrete and structured acts, organized in a thoughtful way overtime, in order to stabilize an installation in time and space. The result is what might be called a "poïetic" of space, in the sense that the Greeks distinguished between praxis and poïesis. It translates into distributive adaptations, the introduction of furniture, equipment, colours and fabrics, the enhancement of personal objects, all of which conform to a way of life, but also by interventions favourable to the energy transition with the improvement of the thermal comfort of one's home. This type of initiative extends to common areas, both indoor and outdoor, with shared gardens, compost, coffee shops, community grocery stores and so on. Through them, a cooperative learning process is also forged in "good gestures", an "open-air laboratory" (Callon, Lascoumes, Barthe, 2002), which gives civil society the arguments for a healthy and useful pressure on the actors in charge of producing tomorrow's housing, in the sense of an indispensable ecological transition.
De sombres lendemains s’annoncent avec le réchauffement climatique et les inégalités croissantes dénoncées par de nombreux économistes. Dans ce contexte, l’habitation est un des éléments permettant de conjurer la précarité.
A ce sujet, les politiques publiques affichent la fourniture d’un logement pour tous et l’aide à l’économie d’énergie sous des formes essentiellement technicistes et normatives, déconnectées des contextes locaux et socialement mal acceptées. L’inscription de l’habitation, en tant que fait social, dans la durée, continue d’être ignorée (Fayolle Lussac, 2020), malgré des initiatives habitantes stimulantes.
C’est ce que nous voulons montrer à propos d’ensembles de logements sociaux ou en copropriété en France. A cet effet ont été menées des enquêtes qualitatives de type ethno-architectural. Elles comprennent l’entretien avec les habitants et appréhendent, par l’exercice du regard (Laplantine, 1996) et le dessin du relevé (Pinson, 2015), leur rapport à l’habitation à travers les traces matérielles d’occupation et d’amélioration de l’espace. Avec cette méthode on peut ainsi observer ce que l’architecte-anthropologue Philippe Bonnin appelle la « production continue » de l’habitation (Bonnin, 1994), soit un ensemble d’actes concrets et structurés, organisés de façon réfléchie dans la durée, afin de stabiliser une installation dans le temps et l’espace.
Il en résulte ce que l’on pourrait appeler une « poïétique » de l’espace, dans le sens où les Grecs distinguaient praxis et poïesis. Elle se traduit par des adaptations distributives, l’introduction de meubles, d’équipements, de couleurs et de tissus, la mise en valeur d’objets personnels, autant de dispositions conformes à un genre de vie, mais aussi par des interventions favorables à la transition énergétique avec l’amélioration du confort thermique de son logement. Ce type d’initiatives s’étend dans les parties communes, intérieures et extérieures, avec des jardins partagés, des composts, des cafés-bricoles ou des restaurants-épiceries associatives, etc.
A travers elles, se forgent aussi un apprentissage coopératif aux « bons gestes », un « laboratoire de plein air » (Callon, Lascoumes, Barthe, 2002), qui donne à la société civile les arguments d’une saine et utile pression, auprès des acteurs chargés de produire l’habitat de demain, dans le sens d’une indispensable transition écologique.
