Les Florentins, étrangers privilégiés ou alliés encombrants ? Heurs et malheurs des nations florentines (Europe, Méditerranée, XIIIe-XVe siècles)

Abstract : According to an apocryphal but plausible anecdote, pope Boniface VIII would have described the Florentines as the fifth element of the world due to their presence in all known places. In this paper, I would like to consider their merchant nations as an institutional and material tool for welcoming and controlling the Florentines abroad. First, the typical welcoming structures of the merchants varied depending on the institutional advantages they granted: fondaci, religious confraternities and national churches were not present everywhere. Moreover, services provided by nations were also instruments of social control. Indeed, nations provided a diplomatic representation, which guaranteed the merchants economic and legal advantages. However, their power to define the members also included the possibility to expel them from the group; legal assistance was guaranteed only on the condition that conflicts were kept in the inside and out of the public sphere; collective representation seemed at times superficial and counterbalanced by the power of the wealthiest merchants. Finally, advantages obtained by Florentine merchants through negociation with local elites could become crippling for the whole society. When Florentine merchants were too powerful and/or in periods of economic crisis, urban population could become hostile or rebel against them.
