This book retraces the history of one of the central actors in the transformation of the Western education system between the ninth and thirteenth centuries: the cathedral schoolmaster. Originally in charge of running the episcopal school, this ecclesiastical officer ended up becoming a real school administrator with a territorial monopoly and coercive power. In particular, he had to issue the ‘licentia docendi’ to masters under his jurisdiction. Using a wide range of sources, covering thirty-nine dioceses in Northern France, the study analyses the construction of the office since Carolingian times, the place of the schoolmaster within the canonical community and in feudal society, then the institutionalisation of his function with the Gregorian Reform and the birth of universities.

Ce livre retrace l’histoire d’un des acteurs centraux de la mutation du système d’enseignement occidental entre le IXe et le XIIIe siècle : l’écolâtre cathédral. Chargé, à l’origine, de tenir l’école épiscopale, cet officier ecclésiastique finit par devenir un véritable administrateur scolaire, doté d’un monopole territorial et d’un pouvoir de coercition. Il devait notamment délivrer la licentia docendi aux maîtres qui dépendaient de sa juridiction. À partir d’un large éventail de sources, couvrant trente-neuf diocèses de France septentrionale, cette étude analyse la construction de l’office depuis l’époque carolingienne, la place de l’écolâtre au sein de la communauté canoniale et dans la société féodale, puis l’institutionnalisation de sa fonction avec la Réforme grégorienne et la naissance des universités.
