Entre phonologie et lexique : l'alternance schwa/è en français

Abstract : This paper addresses two topics. First, it shows that the French schwa/è alternation found in many verbs like mener, jeter, lever, etc. is no longer phonologically-driven. Secondly, it explores the way this allomorphy was lexicalized. It is argued that, contrary to what happened in Slavic languages to similar alternations which suffered the same fate, constraints on syllable structure remained unchanged in French; it is the ongoing move of schwa towards the lexical mid front rounded vowel /ö/ that produced the present allomorphy.
