The process of metropolization is strongly linked with transport infrastructures, especially in the case of urban networks. Metropolitan cohesion and integration are based partly on the quality of transport infrastructure and adequate services. Through the case study of the Sillon Lorrain, we aim to point out the role of infrastructures and services in the construction of metropolitan area. In the Sillon Lorrain, transports must be managed considering two scales: in the one hand, internal mobilities, boosted by the attraction of peri-urban areas, in the other hand, heavy transit traffic between northern and southern Europe. Significant logistics activities have expanded thanks to this international traffic. But services provided by these infrastructures are declining. And so is raising the question of the efficiency of these axes and the services which are linked to them, in structuring such a region, in the long time. Indeed, if it has to do with the degradation of overloaded axes, it is also a question of internal or external disintegrative forces (governance, "top-down" political decisions). The emergence of projects for a Metropolitan integration at a European scale may raise the question of the validity of the current limits of the metropolitan project.

Le processus de métropolisation implique un rôle important des infrastructures de transport, et ce particulièrement dans le cas des métropoles réticulaires. Étant donné qu'il s'agit d'un assemblage d'agglomérations distinctes et distantes, la cohésion et le fonctionnement de l'ensemble reposent pour partie sur des infrastructures de transport de qualité et de services adéquats, créés pour l'occasion. Le cas du pôle métropolitain du Sillon Lorrain permet de mesurer ce rôle dans les origines de la construction de la métropole, et de s'interroger sur la permanence de l'efficacité de ces axes et services dans la structuration et la cohésion de la région actuelle. En effet, elle doit faire face à la dégradation d'une colonne vertébrale trop sollicitée, mais aussi à des forces désintégratrices internes (gouvernance) ou externes (choix politiques top down), ainsi qu'à l'apparition de projets d'intégration métropolitaine d'envergure européenne, qui peuvent poser la question du bien-fondé des limites actuelles du projet métropolitain.
