Apprentissages de la compétence mécatronique dans le secteur machine-outil japonais

Abstract : Apart from its industrial dynamics, the Japanese machine-tool sector is characterized by a certainoriginality in its approach to the penetration of micro-electronic technology. Although it was at firstassociated with the technological phenomenon of the merging of mechanics and electronics, assymbolized by numerical control machine-tools, the concept of mechatronics, originating in Japan, hasgone far beyond a merely technological dimension. It serves to define the emergence, within a sector hitherto dominated by mechanical culture, of a new technical, sectorial and professional identity. It isundeniable that this concept has played — and continues to play — an essential mobilizing role in organizing, at different levels, the learning of the mechatronic skills underlying the construction of a newidentity.By opting for a societal approach, this article attempts to describe the specifically Japanese form of reasoning linked to the mechatronization of the machine-tool sector. Our approach has consisted insimultaneously identifying the actors and their modes of action, and characterizing the areas in which theyact. In particular, we have distingished between two learning areas, one linked to what may be called the «industrial area » (where companies structure their relationships through competition and cooperation), andthe other to the « skill area » in which salaried workers develop their relationship to skill acquisition. Our working hypothesis is that the prior structuring of these actors and areas strongly mediatizestechnological effects — in a way specific to each company — and conditions the learning process andconsequently the very contents of the new professionality
