Du fleuve Charente à l’Artibonite, exister entre deux rives. L’opportunité ultra-marine dans l’arrière-pays de Saintonge-Angoumois (XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles)

Abstract : In the maritime neighborhood of Bordeaux, Rochefort and La Rochelle, the Saintonge-Angoumois hinterland, crossed by the Charente valley, becomes in the second half of the xviith century a departures land where transoceanic journeys increase particularly after the Rochefort arsenal foundation in 1666. This in the line of the North America pionneers’ migration until the beginings of the Saint-Domingue’s insurrection in August 1791. What does « leave » mean for this hinterland maritime society? Whether it deals with professionnal journeys or particular ones, individual or collective, leaving the hinterland involves a double departure: one from the original place, the other from the atlantic harbour. Analyzing the modalities of the first departure journey to the harbour makes possible the understanding of the way hinterland’ societies took part to the first globalization. Indeed, hinterlands’ societies catch oportunities created by the sea or the imperial overseas: board on the king’s ships to experience seamen work along the Atlantic or negotiate the crossing to reach Caribbean islands in order to establish oneself as sugar or coffee grower were horizons among over offered to interior’s society which were not so disconnected from sea and colonial overseas realities.
