Panorama de l’économie sociale au Japon : essai synthétique

Abstract : The social or solidarity economy, roughly defined as a sector distinct both from the sector of the "capitalist" economy and that of the economy administered by the public authorities, consists of the entities which take charge of the services of social utility or which respond, often in addition to public actions, to unsolvable requests or which cannot meet the minimum criterion of profitability. Widely represented by “non-profit organizations” of the type of associations or foundations, it operates on the basis of the mix of various resources such as: donation, volunteering, public subsidies, own revenues from activities etc. This part of the economy based fundamentally on the notion of "solidarity" has often been neglected or concealed in favor of the more apparent and commensurable market economy. However, by its flexible or little institutionalized character, it has played its regulatory role in historical periods of major social transformations. This part of the economy between the State and the Market ultimately appears to be a good analyzer of modern societies which, faced with globalization and its consequences, seek to renew themselves. With so-called “societal analysis”, analytical method in social sciences developed by the LEST school, we will see how Japanese society secretes and tries to modernize the principle of solidarity in a configuration, particular to this country, of actors and institutional or cultural elements.
