Retour sur « l’esprit de Westminster » (1949) : l’urgence d’une Europe économique unie
Résumé
By organizing a major economic conference in Westminster in April 1949, the European Movement wanted to propose pragmatic solutions to European governments in order to achieve, within a limited time, a genuine European economic union. The proposed resolutions, sometimes very innovative, especially on industry, were the result of lengthy preparation and a conference in which personalities from all economic circles debated. The tendencies represented are very broad, but the desire to achieve at a clear and simple discourse has enabled compromises. The hopes placed in the Council of Europe were, however, immediately disappointed, because of the blockade by the British and the northern countries.
