La notion linguistique d’agglutination. Son histoire et l’analyse des verbes dans les langues Boro-Garo (Tibéto-Birman)

Abstract : We first examine the concept of agglutination, as it developed in modern linguistics, and tentatively explore its basic tenets. With this purpose, we (1) start from the way Abel Hovelacque first used the word in French, (2) farther in the past find the concept in Schlegel’s writings, then follow it down to Schleicher, (3) describe how the term is now used in Analytic Linguistics, with examples from authors who described the Boro-Garo languages (Tibeto-Burmese, North-East India). We conclude (4) with ideas about the various shades of the concept as far as history is concerned, and linguistic history in particular.
