L’atmosphère d’une ville

Abstract : In this article (first published in 2011), Hermann Schmitz investigates the elements that make up the atmosphere of a city. He finds them in the interaction between the buildings and the sensitive and affective life of the inhabitants. In order to elucidate the constitution of urban atmospheres, he makes use of several major concepts of the philosophy that he has been working out since the 1960’s under the name of “New Phenomenology”: dynamics of the felt and feeling body (Leib), movement suggestions, synaesthetic characters.
