Histoires de figures construites : les fondateurs de religion. Introduction

Abstract : In the context of the centenary of the chair of comparative history of religions (1919-2019) at the University of Strasbourg, Guillaume Ducœur reminds us that the research carried out on the constructed figures of the founders of religions flourished during the 19th century in Europe and were marked by very different approaches – mythological, rationalist, symbolic – all of which contributed to the gradual establishment of a more rigorous historico-critical method. Since the works of Prosper Alfaric (1876-1955), the first professor of comparative history of religions at the University of Strasbourg in 1919, especially on the constructed figures of Jesus and Zaraθuštra, research has progressed considerably. Therefore, the six contributions in this dossier show, through the case study of a specific episode in the life of a particular founder of religion, the current work that scholars are pursuing to determine the historical factors that contributed, within the religious communities, to such edifications.
