Entre le courage et la peur : politisation et dépolitisation du peuple athénien

Abstract : The article analyses the decision-making in the Athenian assembly from some remarks of Thucydides. Emphasis is placed on the importance of courage as a subjective condition of the people inherent to deliberation according to the vocabulary he uses, which implies considering both rational and emotional elements in the configuration of persuasive discourses as well as in the interaction between orators and public. On this basis, it is considered and compared the active role of citizens in the assembly in relation to the performance of spectators at the theatre. Finally, the effects of the disappearance of courage and its replacement by fear on the process of thinking in the assembly are studied from what Thucydides testifies about the oligarchic coup d’État of 411.
