Le rite et ses traces. Perspectives méthodologiques

Abstract : A major difficulty for historical research is to reconstruct actions as they really were, whether everyday, professional or symbolic. The reconstitution (in so far as this is possible) and interpretation of ritual acts in ancient societies pose complex methodological and hermeneutical questions. The difficulty of reaching the substance of ritual acts through fragmentary textual and archaeological remains, which are often difficult to interpret, is illustrated by a series of studies from ancient Greece, Egypt, the Near East and contemporary Oceania – a welcome contribution from the field of ethnology to these interdisciplinary exchanges.
