Roau d’Arundel et sa technique de traduction

Abstract : The sociohistorical setting for Roau d’Arundel’s translation of the Letter of Prester John has been previously analyzed. One may easily appreciate the role played by the translator (Roau), its sponsor (Gilbert thebutler), and the latter’s patron (William of Vere). However, little is knownabout the translation itself. The present article deals with Roau’s translationtechnique: the manner in which he leaves the difficult fragments behind, later returning and interpreting them according to the broader context, and finally linking them together with phrasal pegs.
