La contraction du réseau ferré français dans une perspective géohistorique.

Abstract : During the past century, the closure of railway lines has been a cyclical factor confronting the monopolistic operator SNCF and the public authorities, in particular the central State. Such an evolution is not specific french and can firstly be explained by the evolution of practices and the rise of the road for individual or collective transport which handicaped regions with low density. Despite the halving compared to its peak in 1920, the French rail network has nevertheless held up rather well. In its current extension, if we consider the lines of general interest, the railway network has only be reduced by 28%.
