Techniques et usages du modelage dans la coroplathie thasienne archaïque

Abstract : The beginnings of coroplathic activity in Thasos occur at the end of the 7th or very early 6th century at a time when the importation of objects was no longer sufficient to satisfy the religious needs of the population. The figurines created on the spot from this time until the first decades of the fifth century stand out from imported products both for their formal and stylistic originality and for the manufacturing techniques used to produce them. These techniques use modelling, exploited in various ways in Thasos. Alongside the few entirely handmade figurines, the repertoire includes a few dozen objects made in hybrid techniques that combine modelling with turning first, then with moulding which appears in local workshops at the turn of the 6th century. The introduction of the mold, while transforming the production process of figurines, therefore manufactured faster and in greater quantities, does not completely eliminate older habits. The assembly of the figurines on the potter’s wheel is quickly abandoned. On the other hand, craftsmen continue to use modeling which, in addition to making prototypes, allows to shape elements intended to complete or transform the figurines before firing. It is these working habits, the gestures of the craftsmen and the ways of exploiting the technique of modelling that are presented here through a few examples chosen among the most representative archaic terracotta figurines from the thasian workshop.
