Le souffle de Sun Yude, « La feuille de saule »

Abstract : The practice of the flute "xiao" 簫 allows to live the relationship between sound, music, and breath through the mind of Chinese musicians and thinkers. The relationship between breath and energy stands out through the notion of "qi", "breath-energy". If the flutist's breath cannot limit or sum up the fluid energy "qi" on his own, it is also fundamental by its connection with another key concept of Chinese thought, that of articulation "jie" 節. To test the hypothesis that the Chinese flutist articulates differently from the European one, that the resumption of breath prints and expresses for him or her something other than the point, the comma, the suspension, we study successively the recordings of a Western interpretation and of a Chinese interpretation of "Silver willow" ("Liu yao jin" 柳 搖 金). Notation and transcriptions accompany and are supplemented by the sonograms of the recordings and other visualizations; some of this vizualisations are coordinated with the recording itself in external links.
