Cartes et représentations de l'Anthropocène

Abstract : According to principles that have long been analysed by the social sciences, including critical mapping, "anthropogenic" mapping actively participates in the drastic simplification of the representation of current environmental changes. Seeking to make complex processes "readable" over increasingly large areas, and in order to make them objects that can be "taken over" by political actors, these maps inevitably mutilate the complexity of reality, and in particular that of living things. If contemporary, digital environmental cartography thus carries the ideal of a representation to On the 1:1 scale of the planet, the one evoked by Jorge Luis Borges in his micro-tale De la rigueur in science (1946), this ideal can only be achieved at the price of concealing this impoverishment of our representation of the world.
