Buen Vivir

Abstract : The notion of "Buen Vivir", literally "to live well", is a notion from the Amerindian Andes expressing a harmonious relationship with nature. It was institutionalized at the beginning of the 2000s in Ecuador and Bolivia, as a criticism of the Western mode of development, based on unsustainable resource growth and extraction. The later political tribulations of the term reflect many of the major debates of the Anthropocene, principally that of "path dependency", i.e. the difficulty for large human collectives to profoundly alter their development trajectory.
