Être étranger dans un port franc. Droits, privilèges et accès au travail à Livourne (1590-1715)

Abstract : The port of Livorno experienced one of the most important demographic growths in early modern Europe. The new town offered job opportunities, with privileges and exemptions for immigrants. Foreign populations were particularly encouraged to settle in the Tuscan port in order to import their technical skills and know-how. Some very developed business sectors in Livorno, like maritime transport and trade, favored interactions between workers from different origins and the emergence of specialized, often multilingual middlemen and brokers. However, the case of the French “nation” shows that it was more and more difficult, from the end of the XVIIth century onwards, to accumulate local inclusion and statutes of “foreigner”.
