Notas sobre los motores en las caletas del litoral de Taltal

Abstract : The present text exposes some reflections on the technical system of coves ofshellfish divers from the Taltal coast, from the point of view of the differentengines that compose it. We will focus on the description of four engines: theengine of the boats, the engine of the air compressors for diving, the engineof the electric generator on the ground and the engine of the truck or pick- up. The different elements observed allow an archeology of the motorizationprocess of the Atacama coast, from the 1980s (or “second motorization”). Also, translated into horsepower, these engines allow comparing the cove withother extractive units (mine, quarry, native forest...) and problematize the re- lationship or tension between the maritime dimension (the horses that workin the sea) and land (horses waiting on land) from the coves.
