Un diplomate face à la guerre civile espagnole : l’ambassade d’Eirik Labonne (octobre 1937 - octobre 1938)

Abstract : When appointed French ambassador to Spain on October 2, 1937, Eirik Labonne faced an exceptional situation. He had to reorganize a diplomatic office that was split by the political division within his country, but also by his predecessor’s administration. Indeed, Jean Herbette stayed in France, in Saint-Jean de Luz, far from the Republican government who had appointed him. This inherited situation created many diplomatic tensions between France and Spain that Labonne had to appease, and he did this with some success. But his mission, in accordance with the non-intervention policy, was to find an international mediation to put an end to the conflict. It came with a high risk of compromising the resistance capacities of the Spanish Republic.
