Le football français et la Grande Guerre : une pratique sportive à l'épreuve du feu

Abstract : This article aims to study the establishment and main characteristics of a specific war culture, that of footballers at and behind the Front, players and managers alike. Based on an analysis of both commercial and associational sporting press, it may be considered that the foundations of this specific culture represent the establishment of a sporting language of war, as well as of an individual, then associational memory whose chronological markers remained considerably loose in time of war. Beyond this observation, the social stakes of such a culture must be considered by showing, in particular, how it conveyed a part of sportsmen’s combat experience, served leaders’ aims both during and after the conflict and nurtured the still fragile social identity and legitimacy of football and footballers at the beginning of the century.
