Compte-rendu d'ouvrage : S. Mnatsakanyan, Les monuments commémoratifs arméniens du haut Moyen Age, Erévan, 1982

Abstract : The Armenian-language book analysed in this review has an importance that goes far beyond the apparent modesty of its format. It is indeed devoted to an original and very fruitful sphere that the study of Armenian architecture had previously left in the shadows as a specific category: the memorial and funerary sphere, which S.M. calls "memorial". For the first time, these apparently heterogeneous monuments, martyria, mausoleums, vertical monuments with a column or a quadrilateral stele surmounted by a cross, stone crosses erected separately..., are submitted to a common study, justified by a community of function. The extent of this domain in Armenia can be explained by the prohibition of burying the deceased, even the most revered, within the churches: imposed from the first centuries of institutionalized Christianity, this rule stimulated the independent development of this vast sphere.
