Templiers et hospitaliers dans la Galilée du XIIIe siècle Stratégies d'implantation et d'administration dans un territoire en sursis

Abstract : In Palestine during the 13th century, part of the territories lost during the conquest of Saladin was restored to the Latins through treaties. Among the restored territories was Eastern Galilee, where Templars and Hospitallers owned important castellanies during the 12th century. However, Frankish control over the region remained incomplete and fragile because of its location on the border with the Ayyūbid and Mamluk states. Eventually, Eastern Galilee was definitely lost to Baybars in the 1260’s, putting an end to the Frankish presence in the area after only a quarter of a century. This paper aims to present the conditions of the return of the military religious orders to their lands in the 13th century, as well as their respective attitudes towards settlement and administration in their Galilean estates.
