Naissance d'une Z.U.P. : Bellevue, Nantes - Saint-Herblain

Abstract : This chapter is the second of a book devoted to the Bellevue ZUP, also known as Nantes Saint-Herblain, which was a major form of urbanization in the suburbs in the years 1960-1970, years of strong demographic growth and strong urbanization. The book is structured in four parts. While the last three parts tackle life in the dwellings and in the ZUP itself, twenty years after its completion, as well as the plans for its renovation, the first deals with the process of creation and realization of the ZUP: the role of national and local institutions is examined, as well as the conceptual, architectural and urban foundations of the ZUP plan. Chapter 2 concerns more particularly the authoritarian relationship of the State with the two municipalities concerned in order to impose on them an urban entity of more than 7000 dwellings, straddling their two territories, with the ulterior motive of their merger. Conversely, the analysis highlights the mechanisms that prepare socio-spatial segregation in the ZUP.
